Grandma's Not-So-Secret Recipe for Healthy Running
Ok, I have this thing for food. It is a healthy appreciation that grew from some experiences that I had as a young kid. I will discuss that in another blog. But for now, I don’t throw the word LOVE out frivolously, but I LOVE good food. Not the gorge-yourself-on-cheesy puffs, soda, and candy kind of food. The kind of food that is thoughtfully and purposefully put together with ingredients that- when they hit your tastebuds it might blow your mind and alter your perception of what is possible in the world-KIND OF FOOD!
This food, when presented in the right environment, with the right friends and family, and on the right occasion will literally make me wonder if life can get any better. Now, you might be thinking, “this dude is crazy and what does this have to do with training and running?” Well, to be honest, more than you would think.
I get emails of all kinds asking for advice about everything from injuries to training and everything you can imagine that lies in between. While multitasking, answering emails and binging on Netflix’s Salt Fat Acid Heat (foundational elements), I came across an email with “TRAINING ADVICE?” in the subject line. Reading the email, the individual was interested in my thoughts on training and asked, "what are your ‘ingredients’ of good training?"
At the same time, I was listening to the creation of thoughtfully constructed tasty treat on the Netflix cooking show. I had a moment that connected the pleasure that comes with consuming great food and what happens when everything comes together for a magical race or run. I know a lot of you have had those days where everything is clicking and you feel strong, healthy, happy, fast, and there is not much that can alter that state. I also know that those days don’t always come in abundance.
Cooking and training both require a recipe and these recipes need foundational elements, strategic planning, and personal attention, the kind of attention that is usually preoccupied and sucked dry by our social media feeds. Both cooking and training require carefully and personally crafted mix of complementary ingredients that by themselves are bland and often inedible, but when put together something magical can happen.
These recipes require a lot of initial trial and error and are personal to the creator of that dish, but when the recipe is right, those are the days that leave you feeling nourished and completely satisfied.
So, my response to that individual’s question of “what are the ‘ingredients’ of good training” went something like this:
